A SHORT HISTORY
I began training in Martial Arts over 30 years ago.
Way back in
1974 , I enrolled at the Yorkshire Karate Centre in Attercliffe, Sheffield. The Yorkshire Karate Centre was one of the first full time Martial Arts Centres in the country at that time, and was run by Stan Knighton and Keith Wagstaff. Who taught a revolutionary style of Karate, called Shukokai, developed by Sensei Kumura.

The main reason why I began Karate, was the influence of Bruce Lee movies.

You had to live through this period to realise how much interest there was in Bruce Lee, and still is today

Another reason why I began Karate, was that I and a friend were set upon by a group of lads while coming out of the Silver Blades ice rink, Sheffield, one Sunday afternoon.

Reet! better learn some Kratty so we can come back and kick their ars..., er, butts, I thought.

I trained for about 3 years, at the Yorkshire Karate Centre and attained the level of Brown belt,

In 1982 after trying different styles of Karate and Judo I was Introduced to the ITF system of Taekwondo, while working overseas.

Although the Taekwondo syllabus taught there, was the same as is taught today the sparring was much more realistic,
There were no pads and the sparring was pretty much full contact.

On arriving back in England,I settled in Doncaster.

In February
1984 I joined Mr. Kim Stones Taekwondo school at
Adwick-le-street, Doncaster.

On the first training session there were 8 students including me.
4 years later Kim had over 200 students training per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3 lessons per night over 30 students per class.

I stayed with Kim Stones Taekwondo school for
TWELVE years reaching 3rd Degree Black Belt with Kim and the T.A.G.B. and Master Cho’s A.I.M.A.A.

In 1996 Kim Stones decided to open his first full time centre in Doncaster, and at the same time, he had also made the decision to become independent from other Martial Arts groups.

I also wanted to develop my own Martial Arts Schools, so on
March 15th 1996, N.E.S.T. was founded.

N.E.S.T. has now reached and passed its 10th Anniversary,
and along this 10 year journey there has been many ups and downs,
progressions and set backs.

Although
N.E.S.T. was originally set up as a group of schools owned and run by me. It soon developed into an association of schools run by independant Instructors, who follow the N.E.S.T. syllabus.

All the N.E.S.T. Senior Instructors, Instructors and school owners have come “through the ranks” this has proven by far the best way of developing a strong long lasting and loyal relationship between the Founder, the Senior Instructors and Instructors.

There are now
N.E.S.T. schools in Rotherham, Sheffield, Wakefield, and Scunthorpe.

N.E.S.T. exists because of the commitment, and belief from the Founder
and Senior Instructors,
right down to the latest white belt student who has just enrolled.

Yours
Tony Mawbey N.E.S.T. Founder and Chief Instructor.
